NOTATION AND STRUCTURE OF TABS Just about everything from my tabs is taken from live performances of the songs many of which you can download on this site. The following is just a background on some of the notation and structure I will use. STRUCTURE FOR GUITAR TABS: For these tabs, I will typically just outline the chord structure. Except for solos, I will leave it up to you to figure out the strumming pattern. However, there will be some exceptions if I think that I need to be more explicit. STRUCTURE FOR BASS TABS: For these tabs, I am including notation to indicate time at the bottom of each line. This is because it is a lot more difficult to hear bass in the songs, and you may be unsure of when a particular lick is supposed to be played. w = whole note (4 beats) h. = dotted half note (3 beats) h = half note (2 beats) q = quarter note (1 beat) e = eighth note (1/2 beat)-can be played standard or swing style 3 = triplets (1/3 beat)-only used with swing eighth notes s = sixteenth note (1/4 beat)-only used with standard eighth notes Note: Mike Dirnt plays bass with a pick. NOTATION FOR BOTH GUITAR AND BASS TABS: h = hammer-on p = pull-off / = slide up \ = slide down b = bend x = pick scratch/dead note ~ = palm mute (located below chord/note)
